Ella - stranger 174/200
With over 60 acts performing across seven stages to raise money and awareness for Macmillian Cancer Support the area around the participating venues in Nottingham seemed a great place to look for people to ask if they would let me photograph them for my stranger project.
As the daylight began to fade I decided to head for home, but as I started to leave I glanced up the street that one of the venues was on and saw a group of people walking in my direction all backlit by the setting sun, one having bright red hair that seemed to be on fire due to the dramatic light. All thoughts of me going home ended as I knew I had to photograph this girl.
Wasting no time I dived into the middle of the group and introduced the project to the red-haired girl, explaining how sensational the light was. Ella didn’t need persuading and we worked quickly as I knew the light wouldn’t last for long. Even though I was using a lens hood I still got flare finding its way into the lens due to the low level of the sun, but I found that by using a hand to shield the lens further I could eliminate this problem, this meant having to take the picture one handed. The other problem was vehicles and other people coming down the street, all backlit too and therefore becoming a distraction so I had to keep pausing in my picture taking but Ella didn’t mind and I finally got the image I wanted.
Ella is from Birmingham but is studying in Nottingham, taking a university course in psychology. Her dream job being that of a psychotherapist.
Ella was the second person I photographed this day to tell me the band she most wanted to see was headlining act Black Peaks.
As Ella’s hair colour was one of the main reasons I wanted to photograph her, we talked a little about it and Ella told me she dyes her hair every other week in a different colour.
Was there anything Ella considered herself to be awesome at? She didn’t name a task but said she had awesome eyebrows, commenting on how well she’d got them to match her hair.
Finally I asked Ella if there was anything she couldn’t live without and she said Buffy the Vampire Slayer and she named Willow as her favourite character and then showed me a superb tattoo of Willow on her shoulder.
Thank-you Ella for letting me photograph you for my stranger project and I hope you like your portrait.
This picture is #174 in the 100 Strangers project, yes, I’m doing a second 100. Find out more about the project and see pictures taken by other photographers at the 100 Strangers Flickr Group page
