IMG687 La Macchina del Tempo (Leica IIIa Elmar 50mm f3.4 TriX Pan 200)

The Time Machine. Naples, Dicember 1962. Another photograph of young people from the well-to-do bourgeoisie of my home town. At that time, we were all freshmen but with many of these people I had actually sheared the high-school years. Mandatory outfits for these gatherings included pin-striped suits and regimental ties for men, pearl necklaces and knee-high dresses for women. Romantic involvements were allowed. Boys acquired carnal knowledge through paid services. Girls had to wait until they were married. Throughout the high-school years, the jeune fille en fleur on the far right had been the object of a long - albeit inconsequential - courtship on my part. By the time I took this photograph, she had opted for the guy sitting on the armrest next to her. I liked to believe that her deeply sad expression reflected the regret for that choice. In fact, they had a long and happy marriage.
