Nostalgia
A long exposure shot of this historical street in Kyoto, Japan.
This place is truly steeped in tradition!
Had to tradeoff some DOF to shorten the exposure as I had a few earlier attempts ruined by passing cars’ light trials.
This was one of my earlier long exposure attempts, with Nikon D800E and AF-S 24-70mm f2.8 G. So yeah, DSLRs are still more than good enough even today especially for stills and shot made on tripod, they also represent excellent values in today’s overpriced mirrorless market.
Fundamental changes when I added a mirrorless kit many years ago;
1) Totally forgo the 24-70 f2.8 standard zoom which I found overly bulky and heavy during my DSLR days.
2) FE 55mm f1.8 ZA became a nice proxy for the bulky standard zoom.
3) Partly because of (1) above, I took to shooting with an 85mm f1.4 which allowed me to create really special images that’s just not possible with a standard f2.8 zoom.
My main mirrorless 3 lens kit thus became;
a) UWA: FE 16-35mm f2.8 GM
b) Standard Prime: FE 55mm f1.8 ZA and
c) Fast short tele Prime: FE 85mm f1.4 GM.
Might eventually replace the FE 55mm f1.8 ZA with the new FE 50mm f1.4 GM although I’m in no hurry since I’m quite happy with the color fidelity and compactness of the ZA.
Having held out against the FE 50mm f1.2 GM in favor of a potential smaller and lighter f1.4 alternative, I’m pleasantly surprised that Sony is bringing out its own f1.4 version just as Sigma is launching theirs.
