The beacon the bird and the boulders

OK so this is the first image I have uploaded or AGES... but it kind of makes a statement. You see, I do love cameras, I've had quite a few digital monsters and and in more recent times the monsters have given way to more discreet smaller wonders. So I was looking through my selection of odds and sods cameras purchased from garage sales and the like and my attention was drawn to a Canon Powershot S2 IS which hailed from about 2004. This was a 5 Megapixel camera which at the time people were paying upwards of $700 in Australia not to forget the really expensive 1 Gb SD card for over $150. My friend had one and he still uses his to this day - raves about it. So why is this camera SO good? well for its age it has more features that you can poke a stick at, check it out rotating screen, viewfinder with diopter adjustment, pop up flash, quite good movie recording, bracketing, exposure adjustment, a whopping 12 times optical zoom (36 to 432mm equiv), good image stabilisation and the list just goes on. So I went out for a bike ride down West Beach and took a hundred pics or so and looked at the images as imported to Lightroom. I was really surprised just how good they were. OK so it was in full sunshine in the middle of the day but it WAS small enough to fit into a bicycle handlebar bag without problem.

So I started to reflect on the collective lust for more megapixels and more features when in reality this cheap little $5 garage sale camera (in mint condition) does a pretty damn good job. Even at fourteen years old and 5 megapixels it still allowed me to crop and play around in Lightroom a bit.

So do I sell my OMD EM5ii? well no but I think I might just start using this camera a little more often!

Happy shooting!
