1095. Purulia Chhau (1) Mahisha-Asura

This is a dance drama from Purulia district of West Bengal. This dance which predates most classical dance forms of India is performed by dancers who are adept with acrobatics and swift movements, wearing the mask and headgear. In this story-dance the demon Mahisha-asura who could not be conquered by the gods was finally slain by Goddess Durga at the behest of the gods. In this picture are Mahisha-asura and his accomplice.

 

This performance by the Purulia team was arranged at Amrita Auditorium by SPIC-Macay.
