647. Pondicherry
This is a statue of Mahatma Gandhi on the beach of Pondicherry, a city South of Chennai. For historical reasons this city has the status of a Province (State) which is usually many times bigger. Pondicherry, Mahe (on the west coast) Yanem and Karaikkal were distributed over the coast and remained as French colonies when the Indian subcontinent was under British rule. They gained independence only much later and remained under direct Central rule for some time. Now Pondicherry is a province separate from Tamil Nadu. Due to many attractions like Auroville and the heritage of French culture and architecture this city is now a tourist destination.
