Waiting for Stragglers

The men of Geary's division thought they had been given an impossible task when asked to climb Confederate-held Lookout Mountain on November 24, 1863. But they did it, forming a vertical line up the side, then turned and, still more or less in a line, moved forward in a sweep around the side of the mountain over rough terrain of ridges and boulders.

We got a taste of climbing upward over the rough terrain on the 1:00 ranger hike. At one halt a participant alerted the ranger about two possible casualties who had fallen far behind. While the ranger went to check, I sketched. The man on the foreground is sitting on a rock jutting from the slope; the others shown are standing on the narrow trail.
