NGC 55
NGC 55 is a barred spiral galaxy in the constellation Sculptor. Together with NGC 300, it is one of the closest galaxies to Earth (around 6.5 million light years away)
This spiral galaxy, which has only one spiral arm, is seen edge-on and gives it a rather irregular appearance. It is nevertheless quite rich in matter giving birth to many young stars.
It was discovered on 7 July 1826 by Scottish astronomer James Dunlop.
