Local knowledge

Local knowledge, not all the 'locals' had it...

The Balmoral Beat was miles away from the streets of Cannon Row Police Station (AD) but until the Royalty Protection Dept was formed, officers attached to Buckingham Palace from AD were sent each summer to Balmoral Castle. Placing a city policeman on a beat next to the River Dee was always going to produced situations that couldn't be scripted.

As a member of the Travelling Staff of the Metropolitan Police Royalty Protection Dept. I worked at Balmoral Castle on Royal Deeside for seven tours, followed by two to Birkhall. For six of my trips I sketched cartoons of some of the characters I worked with and of the mishaps that befell them. A selection of these cartoons can now be seen on my website On The Balmoral Beat.
