Iceland is sometimes called "The Land of Contrasts" for the rich, sharp colours of its mountains, rocks and vegetation, its dramatic waterfalls, glaciers and geysers, its massive ice and its hot springs for bathing and space heating. Iceland measures 103,000 km2 in area but less than one-quarter has any vegetation cover. Glaciers cover 12%, lava fields 11% and lakes 3%, while 54% is barren rock and sand.
