Prairie warbler

This individual was part of a fall-out of spring migrants pushed across the Gulf of Mexico by a strong weather front. In a single small tree in Glebe Park on Siesta Key (Sarasota, FL) we this individual (Setophage discolor), as well as a black-and-white warbler, a Tennessee warbler, a worm-eating warbler, a palm warbler, and a northern parula, all foraging furiously, gleaning insects from this plant. The song of the prairie warbler is a steeply ascending buzzy trill of such high pitch that many older birders regard hearing the call as a reassuring indication that their ears retain sensitivity to high-frequency sounds.
