An adult and a juvenile brown pelican (elecanus occidentalis patrol the water off Siesta Key in Sarasota, FL

This is one of three species of pelican that breed in the New World (along with the larger American white and the Peruvian brown pelican); five species inhabit the Old World, including Australia. The two brown pelicans are the only species that dive after fish, the American species typically plunging from greater heights than its Peruvian congener. Populations of American brown pelican, found principally along the California coast and along the Gulf Coast and southern Atlantic coast of the U.S., as well as in the Caribbean and through the Galapagos Islands, declined steeply due to DDT use in the 20th century but have partly recovered and stabilized in the last several decades.
