Warning sign

All Wellfleet beaches bear signs like this. For at least a decade, geat white sharks have been observed near shore on the Outer Cape. This was not the case when Peter Benchley's novel "Jaws" was published in 1974 (the movie followed in 1975), but reality simply lagged behind art. The sharks prey on the Cape's large population of gray seals, which we often see just off shore. In recent years, white sharks have attacked swimmers in this part of the Cape, one of the attacks being fatal. Maguire Landing Beach, Wellfleet, Cape Cod (17 August, 2020).
