Lower Antelope Canyon Arizona

Antelope canyon is really two slot canyons very close but separate world famous for their very unique mixture of wind and water erosion. Located on Navaho tribal land the only to see them is with a local tribal guide. These canyons have only been accessible to the general public when staircases and metal ladders were installed a few decades ago. Before that only a few very stout adventures went in by rappelling down with ropes and climbing out. Going to the area is not without risk as on Aug 12, 1997 eleven tourists were drowned by a freakish once a century (Been hearing a lot of that once in century stuff lately here in the US.) afterwards the wooden ladders which were washed away in the flood were replaced by steel bolted ladders. Now an extremely very popular destination for photographers it is still difficult to get a proper exposure to the insane light conditions which I can attest to. But modern digital cameras and photo software have made the job much easier compared to using film cameras. When I came here in the second week of October I had hope to beat the worst of the summer heat but thanks to a record breaking heat wave I still had to deal with very brutal heat which did my out of shape 69 year old body no favors. No tripods are allowed so everything was hand held so I had to crank up the ISO and hope my software will compensate with when I got back home.
