These guys have been around since I was a teenager though I suspect their memberships was at the highest during the seventies as many wayward hippies swelled their ranks. I even met this guy way back when who said he fell in with them because blew into town with not much more than the shirt off his back and had not eaten well in weeks after he almost gotten robbed at the big men's shelter downtown which I heard numerous bad stories about back in the days from a ton of people and stayed with them until he got caught up nutrition wise and talked to some people and made some contacts. Anyway Washington Square Park in Greenwich Village is about the only place you can still see them on a regular basis that I know of.
