View over part of Alicante and the port area.

This video was taken when on the climb up to the Castillo de Santa Bárbara. The climb to Castillo de Santa Bárbara in Alicante involves a 2.3 km (1.4 mile) circular trail with moderate difficulty, taking about 46 minutes to complete. Several paths offer scenic views and workout options, including a winding path, a more direct stair route, or the option of using a nearby elevator, or a shuttle bus(I should've taken that) as after climbing the bell tower in the basilica, like an idiot I then took the path up to the castle! The castle itself offers a variety of experiences, from museum visits to guided tours, and the views from the top are breath taking. I can vouch for that! Photos to follow. The castle's location on Mount Benacantil (167 meters high)(547.9 ft.) provided strategic advantage due to its wide view. Built in the 9th. Century, it was conceived as one of the largest medieval fortresses in Spain, offering 360-degree views of the city of Alicante. Santa Bárbara Castle has been declared a Site of Cultural Interest since 1961. More details here. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Santa_B%C3%A1rbara_Castle.

In the Cruise Port can be seen P&O Cruises - Britannia - IMO: 9614036. Britannia arrived earlier in the morning after departing from Palma de Mallorca, Balearic Islands, Spain, in the early evening prior. Alicante was an extra port of call added after an overnight stay in Palma de Mallorca was cancelled well prior to the cruise starting in Southampton, England. Although personally I wouldn't have minded two days in Palma, Alicante was a 'Brucie Bonus' for me as it was my first time here. I would like to return sometime and explore further. Next stop: Cartagena, Spain, on 28/07/2024.

MV Britannia was completed on 26/02/2015 by Fincantieri, Monfalcone, Italy. She was laid down on 15/05/2013, launched on 14/02/2014 and Christened by the late HRH Queen Elizabeth II, on 10/03/2015 with her maiden voyage on the 14/03/2015. She is from the Royal Class of cruise ships and is British registered in Southampton. She has a GTW of 143,730, has seventeen decks of which fourteen are passenger accessible giving a maximum passenger capacity of 3,647 and 1,398 crew. She is powered by Wärtsilä 12V46F x 2 & Wärtsilä 14V46F x 2 & propulsion electric motors - 2 x VEM Sachsenwerk GMBH and is capable of 21.9 knots and a cruising speed of around 19 knots.

MV Britannia had departed from Ocean Cruise Terminal, Southampton, on a hot 19/07/2024, for a lovely 14-night Western Mediterranean Cruise; Southampton - Cádiz, Spain - Ibiza Town, Balearic Islands, Spain - Palma de Mallorca, Balearic Islands, Spain - Alicante, Spain - Cartagena, Spain - Gibraltar - Southampton. © Peter Steel 2024.
