Preserved London Transport - RM1 SLT56 - AEC/PRV Routemaster RM1 - Park Royal
Where it all began, the first Routemaster, new to LT in 09/1954, being a prototype, it appeared at the Commercial Motor Show the same month. After testing at MIRA and Chobham, it's chassis was re-built at Chiswick in 07/1955 and wasn't licensed until 01/1956. In 08/1956, after working on service 2 Golders Green - Crystal Palace, it went back to Chiswick for a front end rebuild and an AEC AV600 engine. Most of it's working life was as a driver trainer. Withdrawn in 10/1972 and eventually sold to Lockheed for brake trials, it was repurchased by LT in 07/1981. It was donated to the LT Collection in 08/1989 and has since been used on various commemorative services. It is seen here looking in it's usual resplendent condition at a bus rally at the Buckinghamshire Railway Centre, Quainton, near Aylesbury, on 30/05/1994.
The camera being a Praktica MTL3 with the film being the excellent Fujichrome.
I would request, as with all my photos, that they are not copied or downloaded in any way, shape or form. © Peter Steel 1994.
