"DC3, You are cleared for takeoff"
Actually, this is me in the control "tower" looking for someone to ask permission to take photos of the plane. I couldn't find anyone so I went out there and took the photos. Later I told the guy that I tried to ask first. He was fine with that.
I stopped here in 1994 to take photos of the same plane. I was told that it's been flown since then. I think he said it flew to an airshow in 2004.
There was a tornado at this airport a few years ago that wrecked 4 other similar aircraft on the other side of the field. Those planes had been there as long as I can remember. One of those things that you look for as you pass every time you go by. They were still there on this visit, but I was told that just a few days prior, some guys were there from South Africa to negotiate buying the heavily tornado damaged planes.
The Rolla Airport is actually just north of the town of Vitchey MO, about 15 miles north of Rolla on MO 63 Hwy.
