1927 Missouri Route 66

Hard Surface Completed

Hard Surface Under Construction

All Weather Road

Graded Earth

 

Just try to imagine the drive...

Imagine the Ozark drive to the Gasconade river bridge or the Big Piney on graded earth. 53 miles between Arlington and Lebanon were all graded earth. More just to the east. Those were treacherous roads. The Ford Model A wasn't even on the road yet! It looks like 40% of the whole Missouri route was other than hard surface.

I wonder what it looked like in 1926 and 1928 before and after this map was made for comparison.

 

This is the earliest Route 66 alignment. It doesn't say it but you can see it routed on Manchester Road west of St. Louis. In the following years it was quite different west of St. Louis running south of the Meramec river.
