Velvet painting

This is a pretty large Velvet Painting I saw in a thrift store today. I'd say it's 3 feet tall with the frame. It's signed and marked MEXICO on the back. $15. Pretty cool I think. Light shining in from the back on the top there. The white looks good on there but it sorta seems like an afterthought or even added later?
