Jefferson County Alabama Sheriff
There is an old piece of paper taped to the back of this patch which reads, "Sheriff Mel Bailey B'ham., Ala." Mel Bailey was Sheriff of Jefferson County from 1963-1996.
The patch is hand made and is not a regular issue JCSO patch. I believe this may have been the Sheriff's personal patch which would have been attached to an armband and worn with civilian clothes.
I have seen a news wire photo dated March 16, 1965 showing Montgomery County Sheriff Mac Sim Butler wearing a non-standard, round MCSO patch on an armband with civilian clothes.
