SLIDE SCANNING PROJECT

This slide dates back to December 1963. Back then in St. Louis there was a road that went by the end of Runway 30L at the Lambert-St. Louis Airport. In those days you could pull off to the side of that road and watch the airliners on final approach as they landed on 30L. They would literally fly right over you since the end of the runway wasn't very far from that road. My Dad would sometimes take my brother and me there to get a good look at the planes as they landed. Dad always had his camera with him and he would let me try to take a shot or two. I honestly don't remember if Dad took this shot or if it might have been one I got lucky with. It probably was Dad's shot, but it's worth posting since this is a truly classic airliner of the time. I believe this is a DC-6 because it kind of looks like it has "three-blade" propellers. The stretched and more powerful version of this design, the DC-7, had "four-blade" props. It certainly was a different time since the police never once made us leave that spot. There were times when 3 or 4 cars were parked there watching the planes, but nobody ever bothered us. The roads in this area have been considerably reconfigured over the years so I don't think it would be possible to pull over and watch the "show" at 30L anymore.
