SLIDE SCANNING PROJECT
This was the first "new" car I ever bought. It was 1974 and this is a 1974 VW Super Beetle. I still have all the paperwork from the sale:
PRICE: $2558.11
FINANCE CHARGE: $537.17
TOTAL: $3095.28
PAYMENTS: 36 @ $85.98 per month
I splurged and got one "option". . .A Motorola "AM" Radio! It had a 4-speed manual transmission, no air conditioning, and a 46 horsepower 4 cylinder air-cooled engine. I drove this car from Wichita to Los Angeles in 1977, and the next summer I drove it from Wichita to San Diego and back. Great little car that had a sad ending. One evening in 1979 my brother and I were on our lunch break from the TV station where we were both working at the time. While sitting at a stop sign waiting for traffic to clear at an intersection, a complete IDIOT driving from the other direction ran his stop sign. It was not a 4-way stop intersection, and he plowed full speed into a car that was driving along at full speed through the intersection. He then glanced off that car and literally slammed head-on into my poor little Super Beetle. He spun us around and ultimately into a ditch on the side of the road. Except for a couple of bruises, my brother and I were not hurt. My brother wore glasses and after we got out of our car he saw his glasses sitting in the middle of all the broken headlight glass in the road. The police gave us a ride back to the TV station because we still had to do the 10 O'Clock News show that night. I directed that show and my brother Kevin ran audio. My VW was "totaled". So It made it all the way to California and back twice without a problem. But it didn't survive our one-hour lunch break that night. It also only had 36,000 miles on it when this happened. My bright yellow Super Beetle was my first "new" car and also my first "totaled" car!
