Subaru WRX Wagon (GG)

That’s my friend and former work colleague Asad with his Generation 2 Subaru WRX.

Asad’s family immigrated from Kenya when he and his siblings were just kids. He told me some funny stories from his childhood such as whenever he and his younger brother Minhaal would squabble in the back seat of their Peugeot family car, their dad while driving had the ability to reach into the backseat to straighten them out into obedient behavior!

His father had applied to immigrate to the US so they waited and waited until one year, to use Asad's words, “they won the immigration lottery” to come to the US. Because English is widely spoken there, they had little difficulty in fitting in.

Asad and his family lived near Walnut, California not too far from Pomona in Los Angeles County. He and Minhaal set their goals to attend university at Cal Poly at San Luis Obispo in order to earn their engineering degrees. He told me a funny story when he and Minhaal were teenagers waiting at a bus stop near home when they saw a bus approaching that said ‘Cal Poly’ on the sign above the windshield. Since San Luis Obispo was normally about a 250 mile drive from home, they asked the bus driver how long of a trip would it be to Cal Poly. The driver responded that it would take about 10 minutes or so. Asad and Minhaal were astounded! They just shrugged their shoulders and got onto the bus. After the short trip they got off of the bus and set foot onto Cal Poly Pomona! They had never realized until then that they could remain living at home to attend engineering school at Cal Poly Pomona instead of relocating halfway up the state to Cal Poly San Luis Obispo!
