That's a 1980 Mazda 626 2-door that my best friend Tom and I took on a 2-week driving trip in order to avoid predicted traffic jams during the Olympic Games that were being hosted by Los Angeles that Summer of 1984. Our 6000+ mile trip took us from California through Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado, Wyoming, Nebraska, South Dakota, Montana, Alberta, British Columbia, Washington, Oregon and back to California.

I wish that I had come across this Polaroid shot maybe 5 years ago because it would have precisely answered a question that Tom had posed to me about the location. He and his wife were searching for a spot for their retirement home at the time and he was trying to remember where this place in Montana was because of its spaciousness and beauty. Tom and his wife did buy a beautiful home in northern Washington not far from the US-Canada border. Sadly, Tom passed away earlier this year and I’m certain that he would have gotten great pleasure out of seeing this photo.

Thoughts in retrospect have me wishing that I had also taken my 35mm film camera on the trip, a Pentax Spotmatic. That way I would have taken more photos on the adventure than the relatively pricey (and thus rare) Polaroid shots entailed.
