The Inspector

October 1992. (Oh, my! 30 years ago! How time flies.) I'm not sure who wrote the question at the bottom of the print. It’s not in my writing style. Someone within our department probably did as a joke when this was posted on our department bulletin board. The notation of the date is my writing though.

The photo is a manipulated Polaroid Spectra type instant print film. Soon after the print is ejected from the camera, a Polaroid print’s soft developing emulsion can be manipulated by applying pressure with a stylus, say the button end of a mechanical pencil. That’s how the effects on this print were created.

My friend Ralph A. was a Senior Inspector within the plant. There were some periods in which he and I covered the same units as the Inspector and Mechanical Engineer. He actually started in the plant as a pipefitter, but then in time he earned his qualifications to be an Inspector.

When he was union-represented as a pipefitter he was known to pull some practical jokes himself.
