With the current interest in the movie Ford v Ferrari, it's fascinating to see the actual men characterized in that film and historical images of the car’s development.

The year description at the source states 1965 for this photo. This photo and others in the series strongly indicate the location as Riverside International Raceway, where Shelby American performed their on-track testing. The 'Champion' sign in the upper left was mounted onto a structure that spanned across the back straight at Riverside Raceway.

The car still shows the Borrani wire wheels that were fitted up to the 1964 season until they were replaced for 1965 by Shelby American with lighter Halibrand magnesium wheels. More details of the car’s development can be read here: www.thecarsource.com/shelby/gt40.html

That's Ken Miles with his hands on the rear tire. From the context of the photos in the set, there is a very strong possibility that the young man with his hands on the car's roof is Peter Miles, son of Ken Miles. In another photo in the set, the same young man is wearing a jacket with the word 'Cobra' on the back.
