Hedgehog, a Carlisle garden, 13 October 12
Although I've lived here for 27 years, this is only the second time I've seen a hedgehog in my garden! It was tiny, easily fitting into the palm of my hand, and so obviously a juvenile. Apparently youngsters become independent at about six weeks of age (most being born in early summer) and are much more likely to be seen in daytime than adults. As there was no reason to believe it was ill or injured, I just placed it in a sheltered spot in the garden and let it be.
