Merchandise Beach
Grand Island is underlain by the same geology that formed the Pictured Rocks in Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore just a few miles east, and that geology tends to meet the lake at cliffs. There aren't many spots around the island where you can actually get down to the lake shore without a long fall, so we were lucky to find this little rock beach. This is where we had our lunch, a couple of deli counter sandwiches we'd bought at the little grocery store in Munising. We were following a sort of circle path that I think is popular for Grand Island visitors, only we were running the circle in a clockwise direction, and everybody else was doing it the other way, so we had this little beach to ourselves. It was nice.
