Exploration

We rose from hotel beds in Flagstaff and set out for the final push home. The route we took from Flagstaff back to Chicago was about 1,800 miles long, and we were running out of time. We eventually decided to do the whole thing in one big push.

It started out on the southern edge of the Colorado plateau, through a generally flat region dotted by distant mountains and mesas. This is all flatland sediment, the kind of arrangement where you wouldn't be surprised to see drilling rigs. I've never looked it up, so I don't know if there's anything here that makes the cost of drilling worth it. This is the only rig we saw, and I would think it's probably looking for water.
