Los Angeles Union Station

The often photographed (in movies and stills) Los Angeles Union Station. Built in 1939 by Santa Fe, Southern Pacific, and Union Pacific, it has been known ever since as the "Last Great Railway Station". Seemingly endless disputes over location and cost (things political never change) delayed construction for 30-40 years past the time that most cities built their larger "union" stations. LAUS is the only "Union Station" in California and is also the largest train station in the state.

I've watched for the last 30 years as LAUS (my favorite building in LA) has transformed from a typical 1970's train station eyesore to becoming the centerpiece of Southern California ground transportation. Used today by Amtrak, MetroLink, Metro Rail and busses, and subway. The building is in fabulous condition and is virant and busy every day of the week. During my "commuter days" 10 years ago, I found the station to be used as a movie studio almost as much as a train station.
