Promise of Hope

Our day cruise to the Northwestern Fjords in Alaska didn't quite go as planned. With storms moving in, the crew opted to head to two closer Fjords featuring Holgate and Aialik Glaciers. The shot here was taken from the back of our boat as we had departed Holgate.

An hour later we got to Aialik and had some lunch and cocktail featuring some freshly-caught glacier ice floating near by. Even with a shorter itinerary, the weather system moved in faster than the crew had anticipated, we departed quickly and made our way back to Seward. For the next three hours, the 10-12 foot swells from the east and south would stack, giving us a ride of our lives as we would on so many times, no longer be able to see the sky, only waves.

I have been on boats my entire life and will admit on two occasions, the rolls gave me pause. We were fortunate to be sharing a table with a retired couple from Switzerland who were enjoying themselves - so glad for their companionship that day. My wife was petrified (she's not a water person), I could only hold her shaking hands and tell her she was doing great. The crew fumbled and lunged around the listing upper and lower decks just managing to remain on their feet, reassuring passengers as one-quarter of us became ill - they were fantastic in keeping calm and admitted later that the trip was "nasty".

As we steamed back into Seward's harbor, a giant rainbow (pictured here) greeted us from across the bay. It was quite the adventure!
