2928 Wingello

2928N limestone trails a thin plume of dust as it climbs up the hump out of Wingello.

In the late 1990s, interstate operator National Rail Corporation won its first intrastate contract in NSW, taking the Medway Quarry to Port Kembla steelworks limestone traffic from NSW incumbent operator, FreightCorp.

NRC were able to offer a cost-effective service by utilising two NR class locos that would otherwise stand over during the day at Port Kembla, between their arrival and departure on the Brisbane steel trains. New RHEH limestone hoppers were purchased to run one daily return train of 33 wagons.

NRC and FreightCorp were later sold and amalgamated to become Pacific National, yet in 2018, NR class locomotives off the Brisbane steel train and RHEH wagons are still utilised to run the daily Medway-Pt Kembla limestone train, 9227N returning 2928N.
