Female Scoliid wasp - Hairy Flower Wasp - Explored
I was out walking the neighbourhood today when I spotted this insect. At first I thought it was a wasp, but the more I looked at it, I thought it was a bee. The only problem is - it is huge and was so heavy that the stems of the flowers had trouble holding up the weight. I think the flowers are called Easter daisies - the flowers are about 3 cms wide, which would make the insect at least 5 cms. What does everyone think it is?? It was so big that it didn't have to fly to get onto other flowers, it just reached over, as you can see by the next photo. These are SOOC, only cropped. I have been told that it is a Female Scoliid Wasp, but this one was bigger than those in the descriptions that I have found on the internet. Thank you ozymiles, I think I agree it is a Hairy Flower Wasp. See link: www.lochmantransparencies.com/p3084/hairy-flower-wasp
