Statue of Veer Sambudhan Phonglo, Freedom Fighter.
Sambudhan Phonglo's exploit in challenging the might of the British Empire.
"In 1882 Sambudhan, a religious cachari...,started a minor insurrection to try to restore the old Cachari kingdom. A few years earlier (1879) the Frontier Police in this district having been moved to Silchar, they had been replaced by a body of Kuki Militia 200 strong, raised in these hills and stationed at Gunjong, then the civil headquarters, lying some 15 miles west of Haflong (sketch map 4) also holding posts on the south west Angami border.
Sambudhan took up his abode at Maibong, the old time capital of the Cacharis"......
"Major Boyd, the Deputy Commissioner, with 40 of the Militia marched from Gunjong on the 13th January, 1882, to Maibong, 20 miles off, intending to capture the fanatic, who leaving Maibong and evading Boyd, fell upon Gunjong, killing many and burning the place down. Sambudhan then turned back and hurried to Maibong. Soon after dawn on the 16th Boyd's party, who had spent the night there, were roused by the shouts and drums of the fanatic's crowd returning exultant from their raid and in the ensuing fight Boyd was mortally wounded, and the escort, who displayed but little fighting spirit, were dispersed with some loss."......
"The Kuki Militia, having shown up badly in this episode were disbanded a few months later"..."History of The Assam Rifles" by Col.L.W.Shakespear (published 1929) at pages 80-81.
According to Alexander Mackenzie, in his book entitled "The North-East Frontier of India" at page 148, ... "the Kuki sentry both at Gunjung and Maibong didn't fire a shot and preferred to melt into the forest rather than fight their attackers...".
