General Grant's Cabin

As the Siege of Petersburg unfolded in the fall of 1864, twenty-two log cabins were built on the grounds of Appomattox Manor to replace the tents used by General Grant and his staff. Grant's cabin was near the center. He used the front room as his office and the back room as his private quarters. In December 1864, he brought his wife, Julia, and son, Jesse, to City Point to join him in his quarters. The cabin was placed on display at Fairmont park in in Philadelphia in 1865. In 1983, the National Park Service restored it and moved the cabin back to its original site at City Point.
