Fire Screen

Fire Screen, by John La Farge (1835-1910), ca. 1880-1885. Leaded opalescent glass with painted wood. Along with Louis Comfort Tiffany, he pioneered the use of opalescent glass in stained glass window manufacturing, revolutionizing the medium.

An early rival of Tiffany, the American painter and designer John La Farge used opalescent glass to create windows that looked unlike anything seen before. Here, he has used glass to decorate a fire screen that would have covered a fireplac when not in use. Each circle of the screen's glass is unique, its colors swimming beneath the surface in soft gradations and confetti-like chips.
