"... Dublin Castle, a gloomy building with two courtyards, originally built in the 13th cent. Built as a fortress, now the official residence of the Viceroy. On the S. side of the first courtyard (Upper Castle Yard) are the Viceregal State Rooms (St Patrick's Hall, Presence Chamber, and Council Chamber with life-sized portraits of all the Viceroys)..."--Baedeker 1899.
