Blarney Station

Cork & Muskerry Railway station at Blarney. Adaptive reuse as Erin Giftstore, a souvenir shop. The Square, Blarney

The Cork and Muskerry Light Railway (CMLR) opened to Blarney in 1887. It was the railway that touched off the descent of throngs of tourists upon "Old Castle Blarney". All visitors to Blarney in those days had to pay their entry fee to the railway company, whether or not they arrived by train. The Blarney Castle gardens were laid out at that time as an added attraction as visitors made their way to the castle. The railway ceased operation in 1934.

"Worthwhile excursion (railway from the west end of Great George’s St.; also very recommendable by carriage) to (8 1/4 M.) Blarney, with the old Blarney Castle (36m high Tower), in whose walls the legendary stone of Blarney (which must be kissed to gain eloquence), a new manor house, and handsome grounds."--Baedeker 1899.
