Milner Road, Heswall

White Cottage, the Barlow family home at left and adjacent Sandon Arms pub in Heswall, Cheshire, in the 1930s. The Barlow house was built about 1860, the Sandon Arms in 1865. The row of terrace houses beyond is Sandon Terrace. Milner Road.

Milner Road, leading to Barnston, was once known as Slack Road. Slack derives from Old Norse slakki or hollows, a shallow depression. Evidence of Viking influence in the Wirrall. "The Slack" was considered part of the Heswall Hills section of the town.

White Cottage was later demolished to provide a car park for the Sandon Arms, later known as The Slack pub. The Slack was demolished in 2016 and the block is now occupied by newly built terrace houses (townhouses).
