INTERVIEW GUESTS- ZERO-G: SCIENCE FICTION, FANTASY & HISTORICAL RADIO SHOW 3RRR FM MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA - PROFESSOR HIROSHI ISHIGURO'S TELENOID R1 (A)
Rock star roboticist, Professor Hiroshi Ishiguro was in Melbourne for the "Experimenta: Speak To Me" exhibition in September, 2012, and I had a chance to speak to him about his work. Professor Ishiguro is the Director of the Intelligent Robotics Laboratory at Osaka University in Japan.
This is the "Telenoid R1" robot, which is teleoperated from another room by the proverbial 'man behind the curtain' to interact with visitors. Its flexible skin contains nine dc motors as actuators and there are plans to market a commercial version of the 'bot.
It's deliberately stylized design may look a little startling, but I had no qualms about picking it up and holding it, finding the experience amusing as it squirmed in my arms rather than unsettling. I've done way too much work with prosthetics for a friendly little homunculus to wig me out.
