Oxbow Alpenglow

Magnificent soft light flushes the upper reaches of Mount Moran while an eyelash of sunrise cloud color remains above the Teton Range, at Oxbow Bend, Grand Teton National Park.

In conversations with other photographers, I find we share a common dichotomy in our thinking--we are on the one hand always thankful to be enjoying nature's wonders and I think humbled by the experience, while on the other hand we can't help but sometimes imagine ways in which the scene could have been even more stunning, especially in iconic locations like this one. Here, of course, I might have dreamed of water like a polished mirror and peak autumn color having overtaken all of the riverside aspens. But I really try not to spend much time on such persnickety thoughts because this was one seriously stunning dawn show!

I decided to make this the first post from that morning's shoot because I love the light on the mountains coupled with the fleeting color still on the nicely-structured clouds above (just a touch streaked with a bit of longer exposure). The subtleties of the hues throughout the scene were wonderful to my eye as were the touches of fall color in those quaking aspens. I have to say though that the cloud color, previously a deep pink, was even more spectacular and broad ranging just a little earlier in morning before the light found its way to the mountaintops. We were fortunate that morning indeed.
