Passages of Light

Light rays and shadows from beach rocks combine to form what appear to me as paths of light into the frame in this sunset long exposure looking across the Salish Sea from Wreck Beach in Pacific Spirit Regional Park, Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.

This was very much an experimental shot for me, as I haven't attempted many long exposures into the sun (and also we don't have much in the way of cool rocky beaches on the southern east coast where I live). I was visiting the excellent Museum of Anthropology at the University of British Columbia, which I highly recommend if you're ever in the area, and I noticed that some color was beginning to appear near the horizon under otherwise overcast skies. I had read there was a nearby trail down to the beach so I grabbed my gear from the car, found the short trial and then headed down the 400 or so steps descending to the beach below. Having little time to explore the area, I picked out a few different compositions with rocks near the edge of the calm surf and started trying different approaches and exposures trying to use the light and shallow shadows of the rocks. This long exposure shot was taken using a Singh-Ray 10-stop filter, which rendered the light surf little more than an apparition and highlighted the light passages between the rock shadows.

As it turned out, there are some things I like about this shot, and some things I don't, but I certainly enjoyed the brief visit to this beautiful beach for sunset and got some ideas for future photographic attempts I hope to be able to make one of these days somewhere along the Pacific coast.

I hope everyone's having a great New Year. Thanks for visiting.
