Algeria Border Post
With Tunisia in the news lately I thought I'd put this old photo up. This is looking back at the Algerian border post from the no-man's land between Tunisia and Algeria. It's something like 10 km between the two posts, much farther between the nearest towns (El Oued and Nefta), and it's all sand dunes and desert.
The Algerian border guards wouldn't let me take a taxi or bus, they said foreigners have to walk. Fortunately there were three Mercedes tour buses by the side of the road, filled with refrigerators which were in turn filled with cold German beer. Four Germans were driving down to Nigeria where they intended to sell the buses, refrigerators, and what was left of the beer before flying back to Germany to do it all over again. They saved my life!
