Istanbul Tunnel

Underground railway/funicular from Karaköy (Galata) to Beyoğlu (Pera), called "Istanbul Tunnel". It was built by the French engineer Eugene-Henri Gavend, with the permission and decree of the sultan of the period, Sultan Abdülhamid and opened in 1875.

It is the second oldest public transport system in the world after the London Underground, wich opened in 1863. Completing its 573-meter journey with a 24 percent slope in 90 seconds, the "Tünel" can carry 170 passengers with its single 16-meter carriage.
