Elandan Gardens
Mountain Hemlock (Tsuga meriensiana). “Year of origin 1550. Collected from a profoundly alpine area in Northern British Columbia, this ancient tree is exceptionally gnarly and stunted. I found the tree in July 1995. Careful root reduction led to its containerization in March of 1997. The heavy gnarly trunk was hidden from view with nearly four inches of soil and humus. Over its hundreds of years of life its needles fell, decomposed and slowly buried the trunk. Roots permeated this fertile mix of soil, covering the old trunk’s base. Careful removal of this upper root system exposed this trees most important feature.” (Elandan Gardens curatorial notes)
