This world famous museum highlights the landscape and culture of the Maori and New Zealand. Its dramatically designed building contrasts with some of the ancient exhibits. The museum opened in 1998 with a bold new approach to museum displays. Over the five floors you can discover the NZ landscape, the spirit of its peoples, its wildlife and authentic portrayals of the living Maori culture. The highlights for most people are:
•the geological displays on the forces that have shaped New Zealand;
•the world for the Maori; including a Marae;
•the flora and fauna of New Zealand;
•the amazing junk shop that looks at the pakeha past;
•a motion stimulation ride to watch the creation of New Zealand.
The café and shop opens from 9 am on level one. There is a bar on the waterfront and an espresso bar on the fourth level, and a World War One bookshop on level two. Level six has an outdoor viewing area for views for Wellington and the harbour.
