Alberton near Port Adelaide was named after Prince Albert. The South Australian Company took up land here in 1839 and a village was laid out in 1840. A Wesleyan Church opened at Alberton in 1858; a Baptist Church in 1864; the state school opened in 1892; and an Anglican church also opened early with an Anglican school from 1859.
The railway from Adelaide to Port Adelaide was the first railway in the colony and opened in 1856 (the Gawler line opened in 1857).The Alberton statin was staffed and had telegraph service from its opening in 1856. The station and platform walls costs £982. It was a fine bluestone and brick station which still stands.
