Mollymook esplanade and rocks.
Milton and Ulladulla. The first land grant here was in 1827 to Reverend Thomas Kendall who had red cedar cut from his land and he fattened cattle. When he needed a small port the site of Ulladulla was surveyed in 1837 and the place was called Boat Harbour. This growing town was established as a private town when farmer John Booth subdivided his land in 1860 to create 62 town blocks. No one knows but it is thought that the farmer had read Milton’s Paradise Lost, hence the town name! One of the first buildings in town was the Post office. Other old buildings include the School of Arts 1871; the Courthouse and Police station – both 1877; the second Post Office 1880; the former National Bank now a café 1870; the Anglican Church 1860; and the Congregational Church 1872, now Uniting with the adjoining manse 1875; the Wesleyan Methodist Church 1883 (replacing an earlier wooden one) but the nearby two storey Methodist manse was sold as it was considered to be too pretentious for the times; the Catholic Church 1872; the old Town hall 1871 and the original own school 1877. Ulladulla is a more recent town and it means “safe harbour” in the local Aboriginal language. Ulladulla includes Mollymook these days where English restaurateur Rick Stein has a famous fish restaurant called Bannisters. In the early days to ensure the harbour was safe a lighthouse was erected in 1873. Although relocated it is still in use. The Milton-Ulladulla-Mollymook area has around 14,000 residents.
