The entrance to the Stockmans Hall of Fame at Longreach.

The Australian Stockman’s Hall of Fame.

It was one of Australia’s Bi-Centenary projects being opened by Queen Elizabeth on 29 April 1988. Work began on the concept in 1975, with Longreach being selected as the proposed site in 1978. Building work commenced in 1985.

A full day is recommended to explore all the exhibits. The Centre has a range of facilities including a café and licensed restaurant, a gift and bookshop, and a R.M Williams clothing store. The exhibits are grouped in five themed galleries covering the history and development of the outback: Discovery (explorers, Aborigines, immigration etc),

Pioneers (clearing the scrub, generating power, transport etc),

Outback Properties, (drought, fires, isolation etc)

Life in the Outback, (leisure activities, poetry, crafts etc)

Stockmen (drovers, stock workers, men and women working properties etc).

Multimedia shows are presented on a regular basis, and R.M. Williams presents a stockman’s show twice a day at 11 am and 2 pm with 5 dogs, a horse, a mule and some sheep.
